The identified hierarchical structure below ranks the Kenya army from the highest to the lowest. The Kenya Army is the land arm of Kenya Defence Forces (KDF). Other arms of the KDF are the Kenya Navy which is the water arm of the KDF and the Kenya Airforce, air arm of the KDF. The terms Kenya Defence Forces and the Armed Forces can be used interchangeably to signify the function that maintains the sovereignty of a nation especially in deterring aggressions posed by the enemy of the country.
General
This is the highest rank in the Kenya Army. Like most countries, Kenya’s President is the head of the armed forces. Although the roles of the president are generally largely ceremonial, it is the General who is in active charge of the forces.
Lieutenant General
In Kenya, this makes the second highest rank in the Kenya army. The Lieutenant General answers to orders from the General of the Kenya Army.
Major General
The Major General was formerly referred to as the Sergeant Major General. This is a command rank subordinate to the rank of Lieutenant General and senior to the rank of Brigadier.
Brigadier
The Brigadier ranks above colonel and below major general to command a brigade of several thousand men.
