The Kenya Army dates its chain of command into colonial history when its last British Commander, Brig A. J. Hardy, handed over command to Brig Ndolo in 1966.
Since then, the following officers have commanded the Army:

- Lt Gen A.A. Adan 1998-2000

- Lt Gen Jeremiah Kianga (later to become CGS) 2003-2005
- Lt Gen Augustine Njoroge 2005-2008

Lieutenant General Joseph Kiptoo Kasaon is currently the Army Commander following his appointment on 13 July 2011.
He has a Military career spanning close to 35 years having been commissioned in 1976. Prior to his current appointment, he was the Commandant National Defence College, Kenya.
