A startling revelation has emerged from military intelligence sources, warning of the imminent flop of Somali forces in the face of Al-Qaeda affiliated Islamist Al-Shabaab strategic tactics. It is reported that the notorious terrorist group has possibly bought off key military figures within the SNA unit in Galmudug, leading to their desertion of posts and the recapture of nearly 60% of previously liberated territory. This dire situation is currently unfolding, with expectations that the SNA will revert to their pre-war positions against Al-Shabaab before the end of the holy month of Ramadan.
What is even more alarming is that this crucial information was shared with top officials such as the director of NISA, the president of Galmudug, the Minister of Interior, and the National Security Advisor, yet none have deemed it necessary to inform President Hassan Sheikh and take decisive action against this imminent threat. It seems that political power struggles and personal agendas have taken precedence over the safety and security of the nation.
Neglect and corruption within the Somali government have also led to the abandonment of local clan forces in the Macawisley region. These warriors, who initially self-financed their ammunition and weapons by selling their own herds and food supplies, have been left in extreme poverty. This neglect has created an environment ripe for uprising against the government, as the lack of funds and resources has left the clan forces with no choice but to fend for themselves. Al-Shabaab has taken advantage of this situation, winning over the support of tribal chiefs and even some SNA soldiers, further weakening the government’s defense against their resurgence.
By avoiding engagement with the Macawisley forces and instead focusing on recapturing major town outlets, Al-Shabaab are quickly gaining control and creating chaos and instability in the region. With the start of Ramadan, they are expected to resume their deadly assassinations, plunging the nation into further turmoil.
Immediate action must be taken to address the imminent threat of Al-Shabaab and the potential collapse of the SNA. The first step is for President Hassan Sheikh to be informed of the unfolding situation and for a comprehensive action plan to be put in place. Additionally, the Macawisley forces must be given the necessary support and resources to prevent their rebellion. Efforts to thwart the operations of Islamist Al-Shabaab are crucial, especially during this period of Ramadan, when they may seek to escalate their attacks.
Kenya, as a neighbor sharing a volatile and porous border with Somalia, plays a critical role in maintaining regional security, particularly during sensitive periods like Ramadan. The country has faced its own challenges with terrorism, especially from groups linked to Somali Al-Shabaab. To counter possible Al-Shabaab infiltration during Ramadan, Kenya must maintain a robust counterterrorism effort, including enhanced border security, intelligence sharing, and collaboration with regional partners. The recent US sanctions on 15 individuals and a Kenya Bus company linked to the Al-Shabaab financing, serve as a reminder of the ongoing threat and the need for vigilance. These sanctions are not only a measure to disrupt the group’s financing but also are viewed as coded message to Kenya’s President and entire country’s security apparatus about the potential threats to the nation’s national security.

Given Kenya’s history of terrorist attacks, particularly those perpetrated by the Somali-based Al-Shabaab group, Al-Shabaab, the country cannot afford to let its guard down. The porous border with Somalia provides easy access for Al-Shabaab to enter Kenya and carry out attacks especially in the country’s northeastern prefecture counties (Mandera, Wajir and Garissa). Therefore, it is crucial for Kenya to maintain a high level of readiness and vigilance, especially during Ramadan, when there may be an increased risk of attacks. This includes intensifying security operations along the border, enhancing intelligence gathering, and strengthening cooperation with international partners to disrupt terrorist activities.
Kenya’s President must heed the warning implied by the US sanctions and take proactive measures to enhance national security. This includes ensuring that security agencies are well-equipped and well-trained to deal with any potential threats. Additionally, the government should work closely with communities along the border to enhance cooperation and information sharing, as they play a crucial role in identifying and reporting suspicious activities. By maintaining a robust counterterrorism effort, Kenya can help prevent Al-Shabaab infiltration and protect its citizens during this critical period.
Counterterrorism actors in Kenya and Somalia must work together to coordinate efforts and share intelligence to effectively combat the threat posed by Al-Shabaab. This includes enhancing border security, improving intelligence gathering, and conducting targeted operations against Al-Shabaab strongholds. It is imperative that all stakeholders prioritize intensified CT operations for the safety and security of the Somali people and in extension work towards a peaceful and stable East Africa region.
