Somaliland authorities on 25/02/2018 halted the construction of the UAE military base in the coastal city of Berbera.
Berbera town administration officials were on the construction site to order for a stop to any further construction citing breach of contract.
The authorities maintained that the UAE deal was to foster the economic and social advancement of the people of Somaliland. The contract stipulated that DP World would construct Berbera Wajale highway, a new cargo Airport in Berbera, large dams across Somaliland, water Energy, Health as well as Education projects to benefit the locals.
The deal also indicated that all employees working at the military base would compromise of locals and for the rest of the projects, the signed majority would be from Somaliland.
Local administration says that UAE has failed to honor its pledge which is in direct violation of the agreement between the two parties.
The pact between the breakaway region of Somaliland and UAE was inked in March 2017 in Abu Dhabi.
