The European Union and other international donors have pledged over five hundred thousand dollars to support a multi-national military operation in Africa’s vast Sahel region, which has fallen prey to smugglers, human traffickers and terrorists in recent years.
The pledges were made at an international meeting on the Sahel in Brussels. The G-5 Sahel countries will benefit from the monies as it will go a long way in ensuring that the migrant issue has been addressed.
Insecurity has deteriorated in the region since 2011, and extremist attacks occur regularly. There are also fears that Islamic State group fighters fleeing Syria and Iraq are heading there.
