At least 89 Al-Shabaab fighters were killed by AMISOM troops when they attacked the army’s Forward Operating Base (FOB) in Bula-Marer in Lower Shabelle region of Somalia.
The Islamists insurgents exploded a car outside the FOB located about 130 kilometers to the northwest of the capital Mogadishu, prompting a gun battle the militants and the UPDF-AMISOM’s troops. The Sunday battle lasted for more than one hour.
AMISOM troops gallantly battle the Al-Qaeda (AQ) linked militants and successfully repulsed the terrorists who had launched simultaneous attacks on forwarding Operating Bases in Quoryole, Bulomareer, and Golwein.
The AQ branch in Somalia dealt a heavy blow after close to 90 of their militants were killed in the intense gun battle. Eight vehicles which ferried the terrorists, including two Vehicle Borne Improvised Explosive Devices, were destroyed and an assortment of weapons recovered.
AMISOM also reported that it lost four gallant soldiers in the fighting while six others sustained injuries.
The Special Representative of the Chairperson of the African Union Commission (SRCC) for Somalia, Ambassador Francisco Caetano Madeira, lauded the AU troops in Lower Shabelle region who gallantry fought the terror fighters.
