Hundreds of Al-Shabaab suspects and sympathizers were on Tuesday evening arrested in a major swoop conducted the northern parts of the capital Mogadishu.
The swoop comes in response to the increasing attacks and killings targeting security forces and their operating bases.
Hundreds of those arrested mostly young men were detained in Mogadishu’s Yaqshid district in connection with killing of a SNA soldier manning a checkpoint near Towfiq Hotel junction and civilian on Monday evening.
Suspected Al-Shabaab assassins armed with pistols were reported to have carried the heinous killings and managed to flee from the crime scene before the arrival of the Somali security forces.
Somali Special Forces tasked with Mogadishu’s security stepped up their routine operations arresting dozens of Al-Qaeda linked militants who have intensified attacks and targeted killings in the seaside capital.
According to a senior army official, the ongoing sweeps are aimed at stemming the militant attacks in the capital of Mogadishu.
