Heart surgeon Dr. Luis Bonilla has died after a helicopter he was flying in crashed during mid-flight.
Bonilla died along the Bell 206 Helicopter pilot and procurement technician David Hines during a heart transplant flight.
Dr. Luis Bonilla and David Hines were flying to retrieve a heart for transplant when the SK Jets operated Bell 206 helicopter crashed killing them and the pilot.
The helicopter crashed 12 miles northeast of Palatka Florida
The Bell 206 helicopter is usually a low performance utility helicopter and is not used for urgent flying missions.
The National Weather Service in Jacksonville had reported light fog and no rain to cause difficulty in flying.
Authorities are investigating the crash while the recipient of the heart was waiting for another heart since the one heart surgeon Dr. Luis Bonilla had gone for had expired.
