Kenya security personnel acting on intelligence provided by members of the public were able to kill two al Shabaab suspects after a fierce gunfight which also left one officer wounded. The suspects were holed up in a house at Diani estate. Two pistols and several rounds of ammunition were recovered from the suspects, a fact that was also corroborated by Evans Achoki, the County Commissioner for Kwale.
The two were members of a suspected Al Shabaab cell which was made up of about 9 al Shabaab returnees. Al Shabaab has been able to make inroads in the coastal region chiefly due to MRC activities in the area.
Meanwhile, one university student died and over 140 others injured after a terror scare. The terror scare was caused by the explosive sounds of oppositely charged live electric wires contacting each other at Sunday dawn. The incident occurred at Kikuyu Campus, a constituent of University of Nairobi.
The first explosive sound at 5:00am caused students to scamper for safety while the second explosive sound led to a rumpus melee and stampede as scared and frightened students started shouting “Al Shabaab”. In instances of dread and trepidation, some students fled with their night garments as others jumped through the windows. KPLC has confirmed that the electric cables caused the explosions due to power overload.
