Two high-profile Al Shabaab commanders in Middle Shabelle have been arrested in a massive security operation in the Middle Shabelle region of Somalia. The security operations were conducted by the 27th division of the Somali National Army under the able leadership of Mohamed Mohamud Moalim. While the operations were conducted in several parts of the region, the roundup was riding on reliable human intelligence from the region.
The two commanders nabbed during the security operations have been identified as Omar Qadim Herow, finance commander of Al Shabaab and Mohamed Bashir, Amniyat leader in the region. The two were among the nine al Shabaab fighters apprehended in the operation geared at cutting out the frameworks and ally-network used by the Jihadists in the region and Somalia at large.
As Muslims across the world prepare to celebrate Eid al-Adha to mark the end of the hajj pilgrimage, security officers in Somalia have vowed to symbolically throw pebbles at Al Shabaab as they would at Mecca to root out the radical terror organization that tarnishes the good name of Muslims, especially in the East African region.
Somali National Army which has been criticized for being marred by corruption and laxity to address the war on terrorism head-on has been intensifying its fight against the Al Qaeda affiliate in the country. The SNA has been building its capability and integrating the various state forces in readiness for the peacekeepers’ exit. However, the arrest of high-profile individuals and commanders in al Shabaab is a very fundamental step in annihilating the terror group in Somalia and the entire Horn of Africa region.
