On Monday, 20th August 2018 at about 0200hrs, the Al-Qaeda branch in Somalia, Harakat Shabaab Mujahideen (HSM) militants attempted to stage an attack targeting Ijara RBPU camp but were successfully repulsed.
The militant opened fire at the camp but were overwhelmed by night patrol teams who had received intelligence of a militants sighted in the general area of Ijara District, Lower Garissa County, North Eastern Kenya and thus were on high alert.
Blood was found in the general area confirming that a unspecified number of Al-Shabaab militants suffered injuries and other withdrew into the bush.
Upper and Lower parts of NEP Kenya remain fluid in theater. Previous intelligence reports have warned of Al-Shabaab maintaining small terror cells which are now being activated to stage ambushes and laying IEDs on MSR and targeting patrol units.
In a number of recorded terror events in the frontier regions of Kenya, the militants have been using RCIEDs and IEDs to ram up their insurgency. They have continued to employ guerilla tactics while avoiding direct contact with army and other security units due to their capability inferiority.
