Allied Defense Forces (ADF) rebels in the Democratic Republic of Congo have killed at least 16 people and injured several others following an attack in the restive Beni region. According to eyewitness accounts, the evening surprise attacks happened in the city with heavy gunfire rocking the area until at night. Twelve of the dead were civilians and the rest government soldiers
North Kivu, one of the most populated areas of the DRC, is home to a number of armed groups that kill or abduct civilians. ADF, a Ugandan rebel group that has operated in the region since 1995, which has been blamed for hundreds of civilian deaths over the past four years.
ADF has been a major rebel group that in recent times has been brewing tensions with intelligence on the ground indicating a shift in tactics and ideologies to embody a terror outfit that would have Jihadi nuances.
