On 24th September 2018, a small unit of KDF Special Forces captured three (3) Al-Shabaab- Improvised Explosive Device (IED) experts about 3 kilometers south of Kismayo new airport, in Juba region of Somalia and foiled a possible attack.
In an intelligence led operation by KDF Special Forces team and SNA troops, the army intercepted a vehicle and arrested the three terror operatives on board before defusing an IED that is believed was to be planted on Military Supplying Route (MSR) or was intended to conduct a VBIED attack at undisclosed military base in the area.
The Al-Qaeda (AQ) branch in Somalia continues to perfect the use of IEDs, RCIEDs and VBIEDs as their preferred choices of weapon against AMISOM and SNA troops.
Al-Shabaab is known to plant IEDs on roads that are commonly used by security forces along the Kenyan border with Somalia and in different areas across Somalia. The operatives will under interrogation to ascertain their intention.
