The United States Africa Command (AFRICOM) has confirmed yet another airstrike in as many days against the Al Qaeda affiliate in Somalia, Al Shabaab. The airstrike was conducted near Darasalam village in southern Somalia’s Lower Shabelle region after al-Shabaab fighters attacked from a building in the area.
According to the statement issued by AFRICOM, six al Shabaab terrorists were killed and three others were injured. AFRICOM claimed the airstrike was in response to an al Shabaab improvised explosive device attack targeting US-trained Somali special forces in Lower Shabelle’s Awdheegle district on the same day. No US forces were killed or wounded, the statement said, dismissing an al-Shabaab claim of American casualties.
The past week al Shabaab has suffered huge blows that are expected to interfere with the group’s operation capabilities among them the killing of a founding commander Abdikadir Osman Yarow Chichana alias Abdikadir Commandos, killing of a bomb-maker near the southwestern town of Kurtunwarey as well as CT operations that have left at least a dozen militants dead.
