At least 12 people have been killed in a suspected Islamist attack in northern Mozambique stoking tensions with villagers fleeing the area into neighboring Tanzania. The attack occurred in Nangade districts where the attackers killed 12 people most of them women and children with machetes and setting houses ablaze.
The attack took place in the village of Chicuaia Velha, just a few kilometers from Tanzania. Cabo Delgado province has been home to hardline Islamists who have been conducting attacks on the locals. The Islamist guerrilla movement identified as Al-Sunnah wa Jama’ah is responsible for the attack known as al- Shabaab. The group has been engaged in skirmishes with the police and is gradually evolving to full-blown terror organization using their MO of brutal violence and setting fire on houses.
