A US-backed Syrian alliance made of Kurdish and Arab fighters took a military a military airport that has been under the hands of self-styled Islamic State (ISIS) in northern Syria.
The raid opens the path for an assault on the ISIS stronghold of Raqqa.
he Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) – an alliance of Kurdish and Arab fighters backed by a US-led coalition – said it had seized the air base on Sunday and taking full control of Tabqa military airport and its operations.
The SDF plans to use the air-base captured as a landing pad to launch an assault on the city of ISIS-held Raqqa with an aim to dislodge the militants.
ISIS extremist group has controlled Raqqa since 2014, and it's considered to be ISIS militants' de-facto capital.
