The United States has offered a $7 million bounty on the leader of Al-Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb (AQIM) Abu Ubaydah Yusuf al-Nabi. The bounty has been classified as including information leading to the location and identification of the emir of AQIM located in North Africa.
Anabi assumed the role of emir after his predecessor, Abdelmalek Droukdel was killed in 2020. Intelligence indicates that Anabi is an Algerian citizen also known as Yazid Mubarak. He has pledged allegiance to Al-Qaeda leader Ayman al Zawahiri as AQIM’s leader Ayman al Zawahiri and was on AQIM’s Council of Notables; its Shura Council, and also has acted as the AQIM media chief.
While most of the AQIM’s fighters are engaged in ground combat in Mali, he and many of the organization’s leaders are thought to be based in Algeria.
