A UN report on the activities of rebels in South Sudan in the past one week confirms indeed there was an ethnic massacre that left hundreds dead.
Over two hundred people of different ethnicity different from that of the rebels were slaughtered in cold blood inside Bentiu, the capital of Unity State, the United Nations report.
The Rebels who are mainly Lou Nuers slaughtered hundreds of civilians when they capatured the oil hub of Bentiu.
They hunted down men, women, and children sheltering in mosques, hospitals, and a catholic church in what are described as the worst barbaric act of the decade.
More than one million are internally displaced in Southern Sudan after a failed coup in December 2013 stoked violence.
Intelligence Report on the Massacre
Intelligence shows that Machar’s Nuer Rebels have been targeting Kiir’s Dinka people.
The United Nations mission in South Sudan reports that the Nuer rebels searched places holding internally displaced persons between 15th and 16th of April.
These rebels killed hundreds depending on their nationality and ethnicity.
This means even foreigners from countries deemed hostile to the Rebels were not spared.
Bentiu FM to broadcast hate speech and Foreigners Killed
UNMISS has condemned the killings and the use of Bentiu FM to broadcast hate speech.
Intelligence gathered by Strategic shows rebel commanders calling on men from Lou-Nuer tribes to commit vengeful sexual violence against Dinka women.
Nuer women, men, and children who did not come out to cheer the rebels were also killed. People from Darfur region were also killed.
Rebels killed people who were taking refuge at Kali-Ballee Mosque, a Catholic church and an empty World Food Program compound after separating them through ethnic profiling.
“More than 200 civilians were reportedly killed and over 400 wounded at the mosque,” the U.N. mission said.
