15th February 2016: The UK through its Minister of State for the Armed Forces, Penny Mordaunt during her official visit in Somali on Sunday February 14th announced an additional $4.3 million to the UN Somalia National Army Trust Fund.
The additional funds will be used to pay for rations, fuels and medical supplies in support of the Somalia National Army in their fight against al Shabaab. The donation is a renewed commitment of the United Kingdom to the SNA in building the foundations necessary for lasting security in Somalia especially during the 2016 electoral process.
Minister Penny Mordaunt said, “Continued progress on the security front is vital to the future peace and prosperity of the country. This includes the Federal Government taking urgent steps to develop the SNA and quickly moving forward on national security architecture, capacity building and wider security sector reforms, in order to help deliver real and lasting change for the Somali people. The UK stands ready to help.”
