Turkish airplanes have killed at least 15 militants belonging to the Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK) in northern Iraq. The airstrikes are said to have hit the group designated as a terrorist organization by the US and Ankara and destroyed major hideouts and armories with weapons belonging to the group.
The air strikes carried out on Friday targeted the Gara, Zap and Avasin-Basyan regions of northern Iraq, the Turkish military said, adding that the militants were believed to be preparing to carry out an attack.
In 2018, Turkey has revitalized its efforts in hunting and killing terrorists that threaten its security especially including the PKK and Daesh spilling from Syria and Iraq. The efforts have especially been heightened as ISIS suffers major losses and nears defeat in Iraq and Syria making it crucial to ensure that another terror organization does not sprout to replacing the falling caliphate.
