Tanzanian police have arrested a Somali man suspected to be involved in human trafficking of 30 illegal immigrants who were destined for Dar es Salaam via road.
The suspect identified by police as Yahya Mohamed and his two Tanzanian accomplices were arrested in operations targeting human traffickers. The three are reported to be the key leaders behind a syndicate sneaking illegal immigrants to Tanzania’s second largest city.
Tanga Regional Police Commander (RPC), SACP Edward Bukombe who spoke to the media on Saturday said the suspects in Tanga town arrested following a crackdown against human trafficking and illegal immigrants.
According to Bukombe, the suspects were nabbed by police on the 25th and 26th of October from different parts of Tanga town.
The operation comes at a time Tanzania is battling militants cells linked with either Al-Shabaab or ISIS orchestrating terror activities near the border areas with Mozambique.
The past one year, a number of terror related incidents have been reported in Mozambique where scores of people have been killed. The Islamists attacks have been linked to terrorists elements from Tanzania now spreading insurgency into Mozambique.
