Somalia has the first female General, Zakia Hussein Ahmed. The new deputy commander becomes the first ever woman to take on the rank of a General in Somalia’s security forces history.
General Zakia Hussein Ahmed of the Somali Police Force had the new badges of the her new rank pinned on her shoulders by Somalia’s Prime Minister Hassan Ali Khaire on behalf of the President in a ceremony held on August 25 in Mogadishu.
Now, General Zakia assumes her new role of position of Somalia’s Deputy Police Commander, the first of its kind, for a Somali woman. The job entails overseeing of the Federal Police Forces throughout the Horn of Africa Nation.
Speaking at the ceremony, H. E. Hassan Ali Khaire lauded the role of Somali women in the forces (in SNA and in the Police Force) in rebuilding the country battling with terror insurgency. He commended them for their selfless and tireless contribution in their effort of stabilizing Somalia in every field.
On August 16, 2018, Somalia President, Mohamed Abdullah Mohamed (Farmajo) promoted Ms Zakia Hussein Ahmed to the rank of a General and nominated her as Somalia’s Deputy Police Commander along with other officers from the Army and Police as part of security sector reforms being undertaken by the his government.
