- Somali presidential pardon, rehabilitation program, education and training are being offered to militants who are abandoning the Mujahideen terror outfit in Somalia. The program is experiencing successes as more militants trickle in and surrender to Somali authorities. This is a measure that is likely to render the government immense successes as it battles the terror outfit that is out to topple the government.
Somalia Presidential Amnesty Offer to Al Shabaab Fighters
For the third time in almost two years, Somalia President Hassan Sheikh Mohamoud has offered amnesty to the al-Qaeda-linked militant, the members of Harakat Al Shabaab Al Mujahideen.
This is one of the major blows that forces fighting the Al Shabaab group have downed against the militant group.
African Union forces backing the Somali military have in the past two weeks pushed out the extremists from their last major strongholds in Southern Somalia. The armed militant groups have been reduced to smaller factions with no effective operational bases rendering their plans ineffective.
The move to loosen the government offer of pardon to militants who wish to co-operate with the government comes at a right timing when the fighters are strategically in smaller pockets, away from the grip of the militant stronghold. Those who feel oppressed in the terrorist group are deviating to pledge loyalty to the government.
Outcomes of the Amnesty
Defiance from the terrorist group is a major blow to the group in terms of their personnel.
It also greatly wounds their intelligence as the deviants provide the authorities with information that is essential in tracking down the terror group and eventually, with time, finishing them off.
