Somali forces, supported by local clan militias, have recaptured Dahar-Faqay village in the Galgaduud region after launching operations against Al-Shabaab fighters in central Somalia.
The joint forces aim to liberate all areas under the control of Al-Shabaab, an al-Qaeda-affiliated group that has been fighting the Somali government. In Sunday’s clashes, the Somali forces claimed to have killed a senior Al-Shabaab leader, identified as Ilka-ase, who was the group’s leader in charge of the Galgaduud region.
The joint forces also seized Budbud village and killed at least four Al-Shabaab fighters, with dozens of others wounded. The Somali defense ministry’s spokesperson, Gen. Abdullahi Anod, has vowed that the joint forces will continue operations until all areas under Al-Shabaab control are liberated.
