Somali National Army has fought off an attack by al Shabaab militants at a military base in Qansahdhere town of Bay region. Al Shabaab has been attacking military bases in different regions of Somalia since the beginning of the Holy Month of Ramadan.
This is the most recent attempted ambush in a series of attack by the armed fighters. According to sources on the ground, the attackers invaded the camp at around 3 am, resulting in hours of gun battle that ended with the assailants retreating.
Military sources further say that several al Shabaab fighters were killed and other seriously wounded in the incident before the militants fled the area. Ethiopian troops under AMISOM offered reinforcements to SNA troops averting the overrun.
Al-Shabaab which wants to topple Somali government has been in engaging in violent attacks both on security forces and civilian targets.
