The Al-Qaeda-linked Al-Shabaab militants were on June 23 driven out of a strategic town in southern Somalia during a joint military operation by Somali and AMISOM troops. Online reports.
The joint forces recaptured the strategic town of El-Salin, which is located about 20 kilometers away from Marka, the capital of Lower Shabelle region in southern Somalia, from Al-Shabaab government officials confirmed on Sunday.
The allied troops with armored vehicles and tanks rolled into El-Salin, after a brief gun battle with extremists.
El-Salin is located in Lower Shabelle region of Somalia and links the towns of Gandarshe and Dhanane in the agricultural-rich province. Al-Shabaab has been soliciting forced levies from this region.
The loss of this strategic town is a huge blow to Al-Shabaab’s economic lifeline.
