
On Tuesday 16th August 2016, Russian warplanes staged attacks against militants’ positions in Syrian taking off from an airbase in Iran.
Russian forces have been conducting air sorties supporting Syrian government troops defeat militants since September 2015.
Tuesday’s raid marks Russian’s first time to stage long-range bombers using Syrian ally Iran as a base.
According to Russian Defense Ministry, the airstrikes targeted Islamic State fighters as well as Jabhat Fateh al-Sham, formerly known as Al-Nusra Front, in Idlib, Deir el-Zour and Aleppo .
Iranian State-run media quoted the country’s National Security Council Ali Shamkhani saying Iran and Russian have strategic cooperation in fighting militants in Syria and are sharing their facilities to ensure success in that mission.
