On Tuesday 16th August 2016, the newly appointed South Sudan’s First Vice President (FVP) arrived in Nairobi Kenya for talks with Kenyan officials on the way forward with recently brokered peace agreement by IGAD.
Gai who was the chief negotiator of Riek Machar recently replaced him as the FVP after clashes between forces loyal to President Kiir and his forces. Following the clashes, Machar fled Juba.
Gai arrived in Nairobi accompanied by a senior political and security officials of President Salva Kiir’s government.
Notable officials include defence minister, Kuol Manyang Juuk, cabinet affairs minister, Martin Elia Lomoru, Ezekiel Lol Gatkuoth of petroleum, Awut Deng Acuil, Akol Koor, head of internal intelligence and Duoth Guet, head of external intelligence, among others.
The South Sudan delegation came to hold discussions with President Uhuru Kenya at State House on a number of issues including deployment of a regional force to Juba to help restore
South Sudan’s delegations visit comes days after the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) passed a resolution in New York to deploy up to 4,000-strong force to Juba.
Kenya is among the countries expected to contribute troops to deploy in the South Sudanese capital, Juba.
