President Farmajo Appoints Committee to Negotiate on Escalating Tension between Somalia and Somaliland

President Mohamed Abdillahi Farmajo on Wednesday, 17^th July 2019 appointed a committee in an effort to handle the escalating tension between Somalia and Somaliland.

The Somali Presidnt named the committee to spearhead negotiations between the Federal Government of Somalia – Somaliland administration to bring long-term solution besides deescalate tension between the two independent states.

The six-member committee composed of former Somali military officials, legislators and diplomats were tasked by the President Farmajo to spearhead the talks. They include; 

1. Abdullahi SheIkh Ismail – The Chairman, MP
2. Abdirahman Abdi Hussein (Guulwade) – Deputy Chair
3. Abdirahman Maalim Abdullahi (Baadiyow) – Member
4. Ali Said Fiqi – Member- Diplomat
5. Major Gen. Ahmed Jamaa Muuse – Member
6. Ali Ahmed Jamaa (Jangeli) – Member, MP

According to a press statement from Villa Somalia, the new committee was tasked to undertake the following issues;

1. To lead and represent the behalf of the Federal Government of Somalia in the talks.
2. To prepare comprehensive research on the legal aspects as well as the political, historical, social-economic and social affairs on the outcome of the talks.
3. To advise and give updates to the President of the Federal Republic of Somalia on the progress of the talks.
4. To prepare the road-map of the talks.
5. The committee to finalize its structure while having the ability to hire experts and advisors where necessary.

Farmajo’s naming of the reconciliation committee comes at a time Somaliland has been making diplomatic inroads with a number of African countries including Kenya and Guinea.
