The US State Department approved the possible sale to Taiwan of M1A2T Abrams tanks, Stinger missiles, and related equipment at an estimated value of $2.2 billion. According to the statement confirming the sale, Taiwan had requested to purchase 108 General Dynamics Corp. M1A2T Abrams tanks and 250 Stinger missiles.
Moreover, Taiwan would also receive supplementary weaponry that includes mounted machine guns, ammunition, Hercules armored vehicles for recovering inoperative tanks, heavy equipment transporters and related support.
The sale has however aroused more tensions between China and the US seeing as the two al already seeking to resolve a bitter trade war. Beijing urged Washington to immediately revoke the planned arms sale and end all contacts between US and Taiwan militaries to avoid further damage to Sino-US ties and to peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait.
