It has emerged that the National Defence College, Kenya (NDCK) is crossing regional boundaries to train commanders in other countries.
NDCK is a learning institution that trains senior commanders in the Military of Kenya, including the army, navy, air force and other special forces.
Located in Nairobi’s Karen, NDCK is also a training facility to senior military officers from African countries and other continents. Revelation has it that General Haji Abubaker Jeje Odongo who is the current State Minister for Defence in Uganda is a product of NDCK having been in the class of July 2007 to June 2008.
The Government of Kenya established the NDCK in 1992 to make up for the limited available training openings and the high cost of training in foreign military academies.
The college officially picked up in 1997 when it admitted its first class that graduated in 1998.
NDCK in collaboration with the University of Nairobi started awarding Diploma, Bachelor of Arts and Master of Arts degrees in International Studies beginning the year 2002.
The college offers a variety of courses, the most popular being the one year National Security Course that lasts 45 weeks of study, with two breaks, each of 2 to 3 weeks duration. Other courses leading to the award of Diploma, BA and MA degrees in conjunction with Nairobi University, are also offered.
Among the notable alumni of National Defence College, Kenya include Brigadier Samuel Kavuma who was in the class of July 2012 to June 2013. Kavuma is Commander of the UPDF Contingent in Somalia, as part of the African Union Mission to Somalia (AMISOM).
