A MINUSMA armored vehicle was struck by IED 1km east of Soumpi, Timbuktu Region in Mali. The attack comes a few days after a delegation in Brussels pledged over half a billion dollars to intensify the security campaign in the Sahel. Moreover, French forces have renewed pressure on al Qaeda’s Group for Support of Islam and Muslims (JNIM) in Mali.
While MINUSMA was created to combat the Tuareg rebellion commissioned in 2013 has evolved to peacekeeping in Mali, a country plagued by different militant groups and as such making it one of the most dangerous peacekeeping missions.
It is projected that security in Mali and other Sahel countries will improve when the pledges made are pumped into ensuring that the crisis is averted and does not spill to other parts of the globe especially Europe.
