A statement from the Mali government says the Mali Army has killed at least 10 extremists after they attacked a village in Central Mopti region.
They also recovered several weapons, explosive devices and other materials.
Resident Ousmane Diallo says gunmen stormed the Bani village and fired into the air, causing panic before they headed for the prefecture, the local symbol of the government.
So far no group has claimed the attack although al-Qaeda linked extremist groups have increased their attacked in the region.
