In the wake of intensified crackdown against the criminal gangs in Mombasa County, Likoni elders have appealed to Kenyan security agencies to extend the amnesty period issued to the criminal gangs to be extended.
Likoni is affected by increased criminal activities by criminal gangs of wakaliwao, watalia wajuku wa bibi and wakalikwanza.
In the recent police crackdowns, over 200 criminals from the said gangs have been arrested following an outcry from the members of the public.
According to the elders, the amnesty which is coming to an end on December 17 need to be extended to allow more youths who have been in these criminal groups to surrender to the authorities.
The elders led by chair Genge Abdalla they have contacted the area deputy county commissioner to give them more time so that they will go door to door looking for the suspects to surrender to police.
Last Saturday, over 60 members of criminal gangs slashed three people killing one in Jamvi la Wageni area in likoni.
One man has since been amputated after he was wounded by the gang members who were armed with machetes and other crude weapons.
He said they will ask for two more weeks which they will use to sensitize and warn the youths who have joined the gangs.
