
KEY HIGHLIGHTS
Speaking on 29th September 2015 in his address to United Nations General Assembly, Kenya President Uhuru Kenyatta announced that Kenya will stand firm in support of the Federal Government and the people of Somalia till peace and stability is realized in the war-torn country.
The President called on world leaders to collectively join effort to face the challenge of radicalization and violent extremism which youths are turning to.
The Kenyan troops will continue with its mandate of peacekeeping alongside Somalia National Army and within framework of the African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM)
President Kenyatta acknowledged the huge threat posed by the Al Qaeda branch in Somalia citing it has greatly affected Kenya’s national security and by extension hurting the country’s economy.
Kenya is a global champion is fighting towards realizing global peace and security though the calling has caused the lives of many Kenyans through acts of terrorism. By collectively addressing the norm of radicalization of youths and its financing, it’s the only way we will break the cycle and pipeline of global terrorism.
President Kenyatta also addressed the rigid ground of the neighbouring country, South Sudan urging both rival factions to honor and abide by the recently signed peace agreement. He called on UN member states to chip-in and support realization of comprehensive and sustainable peace in the gruesome South Sudan.
SUMMARY
President Kenyatta call come in when Britain, US and other countries including China stressed on their commitment to continue supporting troops fighting Al Shabaab militants in Somalia. Britain pledged to send troops to Somalia while China said it will add it troops in South Sudan and still support the war on terror against Al Shabaab.
