Summary:
A security meeting aimed at discussing the security status and progress in Somalia was held on September 29th in New York on the sidelines of the UN General Meeting that was hosted and co-hosted by Somali’s President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud and AU Commission chair Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma respectively.
In attendance were leaders from AMISOM troops contributing countries, Organization of Islamic Cooperation, Islamic League and UN Secretary General Ban Ki Moon.
Top on the agenda was the assessment of the AMISOM troops’ progress in driving out the al Qaeda branch in Somalia; al Shabaab and paying tribute to the coalition troops as well as the Somali National Army for their courage and efforts.
Despite the AMISOM troops recording the best victories yet in the ending year and thriving in recapturing key strongholds the meeting argued that the troops ought to intensify their direct offensives on the militants relentlessly to wear them out.
The continued collaboration between the SNA, AMISOM and UN peacekeepers in ensuring recovery of the remaining areas, diminish al Shabaab’s military capability, secure major civilian routes and enhance peace building and overall state building is needed to claim victory over the militants.
The recent support pledged by countries in the European Union and the Unite State to help rebuild Somalia’s infrastructure, military capability, and economy and security sector is a major boost towards gradually but permanently stabilizing the East African Country. The aid will facilitate agile movement of the AMISOM Troops in recapturing the remaining areas as agreed in the meeting.
