A terror suspect was killed while two others were arrested on Friday after engaging security officers in a gun battle in Merti, Isiolo County.
Police following on a tip off of the planned attack trailed the vehicle which had assortment of weapons from Somalia.
Intelligence report had warned of a planned attack targeting gathering especially churches and even learning institution in the capital, Nairobi.
During the intercept, police recovered more than 1,000 bullets, 36 grenades, 18 Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) and five AK 47 rifles. There were also assortments of military knives in the vehicle that the terrorists planned to use in their attacks.
The sting operation took place in a remote area, almost 200 kilometers from Isiolo Town on Wednesday evening.
The VBIED had been built into the car and were ready for detonation. “We could not let the vehicle leave the place to Nairobi because the cache is dangerous. They were powerful,” said a police officer who attended the recovery event.
Those arrested were identified as Abdimajit Hassan Adan Keynan and Mohammed Nane Keynan aged 24 and 23 years respectively.
Two suspects however managed to escape from the scene still at large, efforts to trace them are ongoing.
