Kenya’s Interior Cabinet Secretary Joseph Nkaissery said the government will acquire 25 mine resistant ambush protected vehicles for police aimed at boosting war on terror.
Interior CS confirmed that the government has initiated the process of acquiring the new armoured vehicles expected to be delivered in May 2016.
Nkaissery said the protected vehicles will reduce police exposure in volatile areas where Explosive Devices (IEDs) may be planted.
The National Police Service (NPS) will receive 500 leased vehicles by May in a renewed effort aimed at keeping police officers secure and effective.
In the wake of rising terrorism, the NPS has procured two new helicopters and refurbished three that were unserviceable.
“One of the new helicopters will be delivered this week while the two undergoing refurbishment will arrive by mid next month. This will improve air mobility and considerably reduce response time during emergencies,” the CS said.
The acquisition of 25 mine resistant ambush protected police vehicles adds the 30 Armoured Personnel Carriers (APCs) which President Uhuru Kenyatta handed over to the police last month.

CS Nkaissery said the National Police Service has undergone tremendous growth since 2013, evident in the increase of personnel and acquisition of modern equipment.
