Kenya has deployed a Quick Reaction Force (QRF) contingent proceeding to the United Nations Stabilization Mission in the Democratic Republic of Congo (MONUSCO) that has been fighting rebels and recently jihadists in North Kivu and Ituri Provinces.
The Kenyan contingent will join others from Nepal, South Africa, and Tanzania to form the Force Intervention Brigade. The mission of these troops is to strengthen the mobility capacities of the UN army in the protection of civilians. They intervene very quickly in the event of attacks and alerts.
The military said the contingent will play a key role in protecting civilians, provide security to UN personnel and installations as well as neutralizing armed militia groups in the DRC. The UN Security Council Resolution 2556 adopted in 2020 extended the peacekeeping mandate until the end of 2021 which offers assistance to the Congolese troops in fighting the growing terror threat.
