Sunday 25th October 2015, in the ongoing operation ‘Jubba Corridor’, KDF troops killed 15 Al Shabaab terrorists and completely destroyed the militant’s operations camp across River Jubba in Yantooy, Somalia.
The Sunday morning operation saw KDF soldiers also destroy two boats that were used by Al Shabaab militants to cross river Jubba.
KDF is fighting the Harakat al Shabaab al Mujahideen fighters in Somalia under the banner of African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM) and is allocated sector 2 covering Lower and Middle Jubba.
The intensified military operations are aimed to prepare the capture of Jilib, the remaining Al Qaeda affiliated Al Shabaab’s stronghold headquarters in the Lower Shabelle.
According to Kenya Defence Forces (KDF)spokesman Col. David Obonyo, Yantooy strategically is situated across river Jubba and has been the main logistical base that the terrorist frequently used to cross the river Jubba from Jilib and infiltrating into Lower Jubba region.
SUMMARY
African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM) comprises of force contingents from Kenya, Uganda, Sierra Leone, Djibouti, Ethiopia and Burundi.
The troops have been battling the Al Shabaab terrorist group which has been fighting to overthrow the international backed government. The militants have suffered significant blows after losing its fighters, several towns and regions under their control have been cuptured and liberated.
Kenya Defence Forces troops were deployed to Somalia in October 2011 in an operation dubbed ‘Operation Linda Nchi’.
Within two years of entry into Somalia, KDF troops in ‘Operation Sledge Hammer’ managed to take control of the port of Kismayo.
The Kenyan Troops continues to make significant gains against the Mujahideen fighters in Somalia and in retaliation, the militants have also conducted attacks in Kenya demanding the withdrawal of its troops.
KDF has remained committed to the force mission of fighting Al Shabaab militants alongside other AMISOM allied troops until the Insurgents are defeated and Somalia is stabilized.
