The Islamic States affiliate in Somalia, Abna Ul-Caliphaa issued a statement confirming its cells conducted an attack targeting a police officer in the capital Mogadishu. Through ISIS Central media, Amaq, Abna Ul Caliphaa confirmed its fighters in Mogadishu assassinated a police officer in Towfiq area.
This event is an indicator that the group has begun making progress in the capital. It also demonstrates the groups’ capability to plan, coordinate, and carryout an attack successfully. The group has suffered setbacks after its cells were busted and destroyed.
Though it has small cells across the failed state, the group has been unable to establish any formidable threat to the Horn of Africa and the East African region s far. However, the growth of similar outfits east and south of the East African region is an indicator the threat is manifesting.
