A student at Pine View High School in St. George has been arrested after trying to detonate a homemade bomb inside the 1,100-student school compound. The student’s identity was not released although he is said to be inspired by ISIS. Concerned classmates reported to the school faculty and a school resource officer about the boy’s suspicious back pack that had smoke coming out of it.
Authorities, including the FBI and bomb squad evacuated the school compound.
St Georgia Police Department said the bomb, had it detonated, would have caused significant injury and death. According to police, the teen had also been heavily researching on ISIS, expressing interest and promote the organization.
Authorities said additional charges may be brought. The teen is also suspected to be responsible for raising the ISIS flag on a pole at another Utah high school last month, one day after the deadly Valentine’s Day shooting rampage at a Florida high school.
No person or property was damaged during the attempted attack.
