India ad Mozambique have signed two Memorandum of Understanding (MoUs) where the two countries agreed to further strengthen defense cooperation, fight terrorism and radicalization.
India’s Defense Minister Raksha Mantri Shri Rajnath Singh held talks with Prime Minister and Defense Minister of Mozambique during a visit to the southeast African nation.
Mozambique which has suffered a number of terrorist attacks claimed by the Islamic State sought help to deal with the growing insurgent threat. Through a statement posted on Indian Government website on Monday, 29th July 2019, India gave assurance to assist Mozambique in the fight against terrorism and radicalization menace.
Islamic State announced its presence in Mozambique in June and has so far conducted and claimed a number of attacks.
The visit witnessed the growing defense co-operation between Mozambique and India, and the potential such collaboration offers for enhancing security in the Indian Ocean Region.
The Raksha Mantri announced assistance of communication equipment and highlighted the importance of working together to prevent non-traditional threats like smuggling, terrorism, piracy, poaching, etc. and overall co-operation in the maritime domain.
India shares close, warm and friendly relations with Mozambique, cemented by robust development partnership and a large presence of the Indian Diaspora. The visit of India Defense Minister is expected to further strengthen relations with Mozambique.
