Horn Petroleum started drilling the Shabeel North Well in Puntland confirming its intentions to spud the well early June.
Horn Petroleum plans to drill 2400meters deep into the Shabeel North Well.
Africa Oil which is also a majority shareholder in the Puntland oil exploration activity confirmed the commencement of the drilling process at Shabeel North Well.
There are hopes of confirming commercial oil reserves in this region and the companies previous success in the other wells add to that fact.
Shabeel North Well is the second well in the joint venture efforts to find commercially viable oil deposits in Somalia.
Petroleum Corp. (“Horn”) is operating the Shabeel North Well in which Africa Oil has a vast stake.
Horn is targeting the Upper Cretaceous Jesomma sands which had oil in Shabeel 1 well to confirm a petroleum system.
According to a press statement by Horn, a petrophysical analysis of downhole electrical logs in the Shabeel well indicated a potential pay zone in the Jesomma of up to 39 to 66 feet (12 to 20 meters) with an average porosity of 18 to 20 percent.
The objective is to measure, identify, and confirm a connection between the Shabeel 1- and the Shabeel North well petroleum systems and extent of the oil found in the system.
