The Al-Qaeda associate, Harakat Shabaab Mujahideen, has suffered huge setbacks over the past weeks. In central Somalia alone, the jihadist group has lost dozens militants in army operations.
Military reports indicate that at least 25 Al-Shabaab militants in Hiraan region of Somalia were killed in recent joint army operation that targeted the group’s hideouts. Al-Shabaab maintains a huge presence in central and southern Somalia.
Further the joint troops recovered cache of weapons used by the terror militants and an array of other jihadist paraphernalia, including but not limited to the Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) which are preferred weapon of choice of the militant group.
Last week Friday, at least 15 Al-Shabaab militants were killed and more than 20 others wounded in army operation conducted in at Gal-labashiir in Middle Shabelle region of Somalia.
On Saturday, the troops continued with their operations in the central parts of the country within Galkayo-Harareey, a town in north-central Mudug region of Somalia. Over two dozen militants were killed and their operating and logistical bases destroyed.
In latest operation, unidentified precision airstrike bombarded an Al-Shabaab Improvised Explosive Devices (IED) assembly factory in El -Adde area of Gedo prefecture, Somalia. A unspecified number of militants killed in the precision aerial assault.
The African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM) have been supporting the weak Somali National Army. The AMISOM team is set to leave upon full implementation of the Somali Transition Plan (STP).
