The current fighting that comes after the foiled coup d’état in Burundi, between forces loyal to Burundi’s president Pierre Nkurunziza and those loyal to the Major General Godefroid Niyombare could plunge the country in a big civil war, Intelligence Briefs have warned.
On Wednesday, Major General Godefroid Niyombare of Burundi announced the dismissal of Nkurunziza and his government amid ongoing anti-government protests that have paralyzed the country for almost three weeks.
This was however quickly followed up by a broadcast from an unnamed army general announcing that the coup d’état led by Major General Godefroid Niyombare had failed.
Intelligence briefs showed that there was a high risk of the security forces intervening in the political impasse in Burundi in the wake of Wednesday’s foiled coup d’état.
