Highlights:
Hariye Ali, a former Al Shabaab Commander who defected and surrendered to the Somali National Army in Gedo in 2015 was shot dead, by al Shabaab militants in Bardere Town.
Mr. Ali was attacked by two gunmen in the Bardere’s downtown area and assassinated as he patrolled without security guards.

Col. Mo’alin Guhad, the senior army officer in Bardere confirmed the assassination of ex-Al Shabaab militant commander who had been working with the SNA against the militants since his defection.
Hariye Ali has been credited for the recent capture of Bardere city from the al Shabaab militants exploiting his prior knowledge of their hide outs and operations.
The assassinated leader was among the high-ranking al Shabaab commanders that took advantage of amnesty call by the Somali government in 2014-2015 among others like Al shabaab Amniyaat chief Zakariye Ismail Ahmed Hirsi.
The defectors have posed a major threat to the survival of the militants seeing as they possess intelligence that has been used to ambush them and recapturing cities and towns under the militants rule.
The assassinations of ex-al Shabaab defectors especially high-ranking has gone to proving that al Shabaab’s influence and ability to recruit brilliant strategic planners to re-organize themselves after losing commanders to the government side.
