EU has appointed Brigadier Robert Magowan to be the new operations commander for the EU Naval Force -EU NAVFOR Operation Atalanta in Somalia.
Brigadier Robert Magowan CBE, an officer from the British Royal Marines replaces Major General Martin Smith MBE.
Magowan is expected to take up his duties on starting June 3, 2016.
EU Naval Force Somalia Operation Atalanta was launched in December 2008.
The naval force was launched to combat act of piracy and armed robbery off the Somali coast.
The operation Atalanta is part of the EU’s comprehensive approach for a peaceful, stable and democratic Somalia.
Operation Atalanta also protects vessels of the World Food Programme, monitoring fishing activities off the coast of Somalia and supports EU and international missions in the troubled region such as AU mission in Somalia (AMISOM).
