The Al-Qaeda branch in Somalia, Harakat Shabaab Mujahideen (HSM) has claimed the responsibility Monday’s roadside bomb attack where the militants targeted Ethiopian-AMISOM troops on general patrol mission.
The roadside bomb targeted ENDF AMISOM contingents’ carrier in Halgan in central Somalia’s Hiran region that was on regular patrol in the area. The troops were a few kilometers to their FOB located in Halgan town.
In the month of July 2019, attacks targeting Ethiopian troops serving under AMISOM mandate increased. The group continues to deploy roadside improvised explosive devices RIED on majorly used roads by troops meaning the militants have combed on the troops patrol routine.
An attack targeting Ethiopian forces happened barely two weeks ago, where Al-Shabaab militants targeted ENDF troops in Luuq. The low-scale RIED detonated and machine gun fire outside Luuq township of Gedo province of Somalia ensued. No casualties were reported by military intelligence assets in the area.
Its notable that Al-Shabaab uses RIED and then reinforce it with an ambush gunfire attack to attain maximum casualties.
