On Monday October 5th a ceasefire took effect ending the two weeks clan-clashes in remote villages of Sool region that claimed dozens of lives.
The ceasefire was reached after traditional elders’ intervention on the recurrent crises caused by land and gazing area disputes between the two warring clans.
Traditional elders in Sool region on Monday October 5th successfully brokered a ceasefire deal for Magaley and Qoriley villages in Sool region that ended the latest string of clashes. The over two week’s clashes are the latest string of violence in the recurrent clan clashes in the region.
The remote villages’ clans have over time gone into war over grazing and land disputes dated almost a decade ago. The recent clashes have left dozens dead and score injured before the intervention of respect clan leaders and Puntland government officials.
The elders reported that both warring clans are expected to withdraw their warriors from the battle frontlines and follow the ceasefire instructions in the meantime as the government looks to implementing a permanent long lasting co-existence law to govern the region.
